Focus on Relationships First in Social Media

I always have my smartphone in my hand, typing up tweets, taking photos and pushing out content to my company’s social media accounts. Social media can often feel like a beast that constantly needs to be fed.

There’s a temptation to use the many automation tools out there to manage every piece of social media content you put up: you can pre-schedule additions to each social media page you maintain and sometimes even generate posts automatically. But doing so exclusively isn’t effective. The value of social media is that it lets us reach people more intimately than purely broadcast mediums. That means that we need to be in the moment, responding to the posts of the people we want to connect with directly. An automated tool can’t handle that sort of interaction and trying to use one in that capacity can get a person marked as a spammer very quickly.

In order to build and maintain connections, the key task is interacting regularly with people on the social media sites you use. The only way to effectively do so is to pick just a few sites to concentrate on — if need be, you may want to be active on just one site.

Once you’ve perfected your ability to interact with other people and you’ve built some solid relationships, the next move is to start creating content just for your social media pages: until you know what works effectively with the audiences you create, you can’t plan larger campaigns. Start testing your content before jumping into a big promotion; you may find that an approach that worked well for another company just isn’t a good fit for the types of relationships you’ve built.

Using social media effectively requires a time commitment, not unlike the time commitment that a good email marketing effort requires. But it can pay off by helping you build a set of relationships far beyond the typical marketing campaign.

While Google has warned against duplicate content for years, the frenzy of “Penguin” and “Panda” has brought SEO best practices to light, making this important discussion resurface once again. It seems like a pretty straight forward question, deserving a pretty direct answer.  However, there are many variables involved based on the content strategies you have put into place for your company website.

So, let’s take a closer look.  In this post we will be covering:

What Is Duplicate Content?

The short of Google’s explanation is this:

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within a domain that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. But in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated on a site or across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic.

Most sites contain duplicate content… even without us realizing. Examples of this would be store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs, or printer-only versions of web pages.  These are the non-malicious types of duplicate content.  Visit Google Webmaster Tools to learn how to avoid producing this type of content on your site.  So, what is all the fuss about?…

Why is Duplicate Content bad?

The types of duplicate content that Google is watching for are deceptive practices designed to “stuff” your website.  Whether you are attempting to make your site appear to contain more content, or you are trying to manipulate search results, Google is on to these short-cuts.  And that’s a good thing!  Google doesn’t want to provide their users with links containing spam type articles that are continuously repeated within a set of search results.

Yes, Google will penalize you for trying to be manipulative in this manner.

What ISN’T Duplicate Content?

Syndicating content is NOT duplicating content.  What is the difference?  Founder of FizzNiche, Rachel Honoway, explained it to me this way…

Syndication is not a new concept. Television and radio stations have been using the business model for years.  It enables content creators to reach a wider audience.  Today, commercial syndication is being used online by websites like Reuters,  Huffington Post, and Associated Press.  For the receiving site, content syndication is an effective way of adding greater depth and freshness to its pages, making it more attractive to users. For the transmitting site, syndication drives exposure across numerous online platforms.

For example, local news footage of a high school basketball game with a teen hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the half-court line may make it to the national news station, ESPN and Fox News that night. That same story will likely then hit all of those network’s websites in the form of an article (the SAME article used across the board) and video. This is syndication… not duplicate content.

So, syndicating content can be a win / win situation and is ideal for business owners who don’t have the time to spend writing articles and updating their website.  For SEO purposes, this draws the question, how will syndicating content effect my Google rank and search traffic?

Does Google Penalize Syndicated Content?

The short answer…  no.  Google does not penalize syndicated content.

The long answer…  when content is syndicated across the web, Google must pick one article to display in their search results.  So, based on the search criteria (all the weird things Google already knows about you like, what city you live in, what websites you visit most often, what ads you click on, etc.), Google will choose one website to display in their results and will leave out the rest.  Essentially, you will be sharing the search traffic with the other websites containing the syndicated content.

Is there enough search traffic to go around?  Yes!

What does this mean to me as a guest blogger?

As a guest blogger your article will appear more often across the internet and you will get an even greater amount of exposure.  The more often your article is syndicated, the more communities it will reach.  So, if you’re selling a book or product this is a very inexpensive, effective, and accurate way to advertise.

What does this mean to me as a website owner?

It means that Paul from Appleton will find Sunshine Family Dental in Appleton, Wisconsin when he googles, “dental health”.  And Judy from Santa Barbara will find Family Dental Care in Santa Barbara, California when she googles, “dental health”.  These websites will be targeting their specific markets through their fresh, syndicated content just as effectively as if they had written the content themselves.
